Development

During my internship at Ideaology I performed multiple tasks. I learned a lot about business branding. I redesigned Ideaology’s logo and their website, including making the video’s and images. It allowed me to get creative and I learned how to make a website from scratch and what visuals work best on a website.

During this internship I also worked on the development of EffiTex – a new sustainable energy generating technology which generated energy by means of body temperature. I learned to understand and work with a new technology and made several prototypes to further develop EffiTex. A full market analysis was performed to review in which market EffiTex would be most successful. Here, I learned how to use DESTEP analysis, SWOT analysis and Porter’s 5-Forces.

I especially gained a lot of experience in the professional working environment. I got to work with professionals in the field of industrial design, I got to join client meetings, I talked to suppliers and worked in a multidisciplinary team, which improved my communication, and collaborating skills.

Design Innovation Methods

Business and Entrepreneurship

Development

During this course, I was introduced to several methods and tools of business aspect to create marketing values. Some of these tools were: Value Proposition Canvas, User Experience Journey Mapping, and Stakeholder Onion Map. I practiced these methods and tools by using them to analyze my own project 1 (Kopje Sociaal) and the online restaurant reservation company OpenTable. As a results, I was able to investigate end users’ problems or needs, to review the technology attributes of the proposition, review problem-solution and product-market fit, to identify business opportunities, and to create value proposition for both cases.

Circular Design Class

Business and Entrepreneurship

Development

As an extra activity, I followed the Circular Design Class – Product design, provided by CIRCO. During this class I learned how I (as a designer) can contribute to the circular economy and how I can ensure that products last longer. I learned how to implement sustainable design strategies and sustainable business models. These were also implemented in my FBP.

Thalia

The project

Thalia is a project which focuses on adding an extra dimension to the vocal expression of actors by providing actors with an undergarment with LED patterns corresponding to their vocal bursts.

 

Development

During this project, I developed my skills most in the competency area of Technology and Realization and Math Data and Computing. I was in charge of the hardware and the software of the digital RGBW LED strips. I got creative with writing the code for the different patterns on the LED strips and used conductive yarn and a Lilypad to make the electronics wearable. I also got to work with the embroidery machine to create a pattern that would align nicely with the LED strips. I gained experience on combining soft materials with digital materials. Questionnaires were used to validate the patterns chosen to express the vocal bursts.  

For the LED patterns to correspond to vocal bursts, I got to work with a software our tutor, Rong-Hao Liang, wrote in Processing. I already had some experience with Processing from a previous course, which allowed me to understand how the code functioned in a broad sense. I was able to change the code and add features to make the software appropriate for our project specifically.

During this project, we had a collaboration with Summa Fashion students. Planning was key here, as the Summa students were only available one day per week. We had to make sure these meetings were as efficient as possible. I experienced this collaboration as very positive and improved my collaboration, communicating, and planning and organizing skills here.

Attention to the Aesthetics of Prosthetics

The project

This was a Design Research Project, in which the following research question was researched: ‘Can a change in the appearance of prosthetic arms for female amputees positively affect their attitude towards the aesthetical attractiveness?’

 

Development

During this project, I developed my skills most in the competency area of User and Society, Math Data and Computing, Technology and Realization and Creativity and Aesthetics. As this was the first project that was finished during the COVID-19 pandemic, I learned a lot about digital communication. I improved my online communication and presentation skills. In addition, to keep my team members motivated, planning and organizing was key. Every meeting, I prepared an online agenda to give the meetings the structure we needed.

During this project, I learned a lot about preparing, making, and analyzing online questionnaires. I learned that using video’s and images make them more engaging and allow to get better insights. As both quantitative and qualitative information was gathered from the questionnaires, I learned to use tools as thematic analysis and I learned to report descriptive statistics including frequencies.

I also made one of the 3D models of the female arm prosthetic. I was able to get creative to design a prosthetic arm and I learned how to model and render in the 3D modelling software Blender.  

During this project I was able to integrate knowledge from different domains into a design research project. I learned how to do this by combining user studies, research papers, existing projects, and the knowledge and experience from teacher coaches and fellow students and implementing it into the project.

Wake up note

Creativity and Aesthetics, Technology and Realization

The project

Wake Up Note is a series of alarm clocks designed for couples who have unlined schedules. The device aims to preserve the sense of intimacy or connectedness associated with waking up together as well as allowing the users to create practical personal shared routines.

 

Development

During this project, I designed the recording device, which I explored a lot though prototyping. This course partly happened during the COVID-19 pandemic, which pushed me to get creative with limited materials available. 

I mainly developed myself in the competency area of Creativity & Aesthetics. I acquired new understanding about this competency area. In addition, I learned about different feedback types and how these can be implemented in a design to create a richer interaction. Creating tangible products early in the design process is important to gain new insights by already experiencing the interaction.

Effectiveness of digital contact-tracing applications on COVID-19 pandemic

Dealing With Scientific Information

The project

In this project, a scientific paper was written which explores the effectiveness of contact-tracing apps and explains how to reach the highest possible effectiveness of such applications. Resulting into recommendations app-developers can use as building blocks for such applications.

 

Development

During this project, I especially developed my professional skill on Dealing With Scientific Information. Literature was carefully analyzed and selected to create a coherent report of relevant literature studies and to create an understanding of optimal effectiveness for digital contact tracing apps and to the problem of designing a functional digital app in order to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.

I was mainly in charge of comparing several simulation models on contact tracing apps. I was able to understand the models, make adjustments to see its effect, and compare them, resulting into ­­recommendations on which simulation model to use and what to add.

Sense Vest

The project

Sense Vest is a body warmer that makes recreative ice skating possible for visually impared children.

 

Development

During this project, I collaborated with students from other faculties, which improved my communication and collaboration skills with other disciplines.

I was mainly in charge of the ideation, visuals, and hardware of the design. I significantly improved my prototyping skills here and enjoyed combining soft materials with digital materials. Sense Vest includes of 4 sensors and 4 actuators. I learned to work with and combine different sensors and actuators to create a prototype which can accurately detect objects and humans and can give specific feedback to its user through different vibrating frequencies. The sensors used were: Microwave radar sensor, Passive infrared sensor, and two Doppler sensors. The actuators used to give feedback to the user were vibration motors.

User and Society, Math Data and Computing, Design Research Project

The project

This Design Research Project researched the reflective thinking by investigating a self-designed reflection tools: the ‘WHY’-game. The study involved gathering insights by surveys and observations of students using the reflection tool.

 

Development

This was the first Design Research Project I executed. I learned the basics of DRP, as I learned how to conduct a literature review and how to do research through a design. I was able to directly apply the knowledge I learned to the Design Research Project.

I learned tools to perform quantitative research and how to conduct one. I used my data analyzing skills I learned during the course Data Analytics for Engineers to use python to analyze the data and create data visualizations.

Sketching

Development

During this course, I got to improve my sketching skills. I learned to apply different techniques which I am still using today. After this course, I also started to use sketching more as a means to express my thoughts and as means of communication during my other projects.

Rational Agents

Math Data and Computing

The project

During this course, the assignment was to build our own rational agent (a robot moving through an environment, making rational choices to complete a task) inside NetLogo, a programmable modeling environment. The task was to reach the target, by touching as less obstacles and enemies, and as much friends and power stations as possible.

 

Development

I learned to model a rational agent from scratch in this program by applying A* search algorithm. The A* search finds a path from the source patch (starting point robot) to the destination patch (target). The A* search consists out of the Total Expected Cost to reach to the destination patch. This is the cost path plus the heuristic. At every step the robot takes, the model calculates the total expected costs and takes the path with the lowest total expected cost (the smallest distance to the destination as compared to other patches that have not been explored yet). This enables the robot to always find the most optimal path to its destination with the least costs.

Making Sense of Sensors

The project

During this course, the influence of water intake on the physical activity was researched by collecting data about the amount of water consumption in weight and physical activity in steps. I collected data through sensors and analyzed it.

 

Development

I especially developed myself in the competency areas of Math Data and Computing. I learned that a valuable tool for gathering detailed and rich quantitative data are sensors. In addition, I developed my skills of using the software program Python. I used this program to clean, and analyze the gathered data and visualize the results. During this course, I got an understanding of the basic principles of data acquisition, data processing, and data transport for the used sensors.

 

Calculus Tutor

Communicating, Planning and Organizing

Development

In my second years bachelor I was a calculus A tutor. My task was to help first years students with calculus, and answer their question. I prepared my tutor sessions and at the start of each session I gave a small presentation about what was covered in that week’s lecture. Being a tutor especially improved my professional skills of communicating, and planning and organization. Teaching is a whole different variant of communication and I learned to communicate to the students in such a way that everyone stayed involved and participated interactively. In addition, I had to organize the activities done in the tutor hours. I learned to efficiently organize a tutor hour by making sure there is enough time for making assignments together and asking questions, while stimulating everyone to participate interactively. I did this by asking students to write on the board and explain their thoughts out loud.

Kopje Sociaal

The project

Kopje Sociaal is a product that helps the elderly in care homes to make more social contact during the coffee/tea hour.

 

Development

During this project my main contribution were the visuals (posters and video), the 3D modelling of the cup, the software and hardware of the color changing cups and the usability test.

I performed a user interview at the beginning of this project and learned that visiting the target group (care home residents) and people who are involved (care takers) helps to understand the context and gain new insights. After making a prototype, I also performed a usability test at a care home. This was one of the first usability tests I performed and I learned that doing it helps to understand how people actually use a product and for what purpose.

I also developed my skills here on the prototyping level. It was one of my first times prototyping and it was my first time making a 3D model. I learned how to use different components to make a circuit work and I learned the basics of 3D modeling.

Violet

Technology and Realization

The project

Violet is an educational game used to teach foreign children the Dutch words that belong to different colours.

 

Development

During this project, I especially developed my skills in the competency area of Technology and Realization. I learned the basics of how to combine components in a circuit and how to connect them properly with a teensy. I also learned the basics of how to write code in Arduino IDE and I learned how to make a schematic that looks ordered. I used these basic skills I learned here in my following projects.

Slam Dump

Creativity and Aestheticsp

The project

Slam Dump is a trashcan which makes it more fun to throw away trash and creates awareness of the amounts of waste that is thrown away.

 

Development

During this project, I especially developed my skills in the competency area of Creativity and Aesthetics. The course in which this project was executed taught me several ideation techniques to use in the ideation phase of the project. I could immediately implement these in the project Slamp Dump.

The project

For this course, I developed a poster using Processing, and I developed a game combining processing and Arduino IDE.

 

Development

During this course I learned the basics of programming and using electronics. I used this basic knowledge in my following projects.

Development

During this course I learned the basics of how a user can be involved in a design process and I learned how low-fidelity prototypes can be used to execute a user test. I used this basic knowledge in my following projects.

Light & Experience

Development

During this course, a PACT analysis on the central train station in Eindhoven was executed and used to propose an opportunity on how information decoration could be valuable for visitors of the train station. For this PACT analysis, I learned to gather information through an empirical research. I learned to conduct an empirical research by making observations at central station Eindhoven.

In addition, during this course, I learned how to use cultural probe to find hidden needs according to lighting in the kitchen.

Development

During this course, I learned the basic techniques for processing large data sets in an reliable, consistent and efficient manner. I developed my skills in interpreting, understanding and documenting data in the context of realistic scenarios. I used this knowledge in my following projects.

CLEMO

The project

CLEMO is a self-cleaning antibacterial car seat cover designed for shared cars, which communicates to its users through a color changing patch, and allows users to get more information through a QR code
